Thermal Imaging Device

Postby Angel of Death » Wed Jun 16, 2004 10:00 pm

I think a thermal imaging device would be pretty cool. This device would allow you to see your enemies and teammates. It would of cousre differentiate between the two by showing if they were a T or a CT and would cost 3 credits and of course would not damage the players.

Game play with this device would still be challenging because it does not damage the player it only lets you see where they are. A thermal imaging device does not show walls either, so if you go into one room while using this device they may very well be in the next room over. It also gives the element of surprise and still gives the other player a fair chance of surviving.

The tactical advantage of this device is to see where your opponent is as well as your teammates. Gives you the element of surprise as well as the the upper hand in the fire fight. It is especially useful when there is only one opponent left and is either hiding or looking for you on the other side of the map.

Good Idea. For the past two months I have been trying to develope a similar concept based on the lastest night vision used by the military. The devices use a Gen 3 night vision tube and a far infrared detector. The images from both tubes are combined producing a stunning image. You can see people hidding in bushes and it is not limited by distance. You can not see through walls though, that just happens in the movies. If you were to look at a wall you would see the heat emited by the wall, not what is on the other side. If something REALLY hot was on the other side heating the wall you would just see a circular glow on the wall.

Unfortunately there are some pretty big techincal issues. Night vision code needs to run on client side. This is a problem since all the server mods have to be server side. If I can figure a way to change the view of just one player using server side code you will probabibly see an infra-red device on the server.

Sounds cool.
Serious question:
-Are you IN the army or SWAT or something like that??
Cause you really know A LOT of new things that are being developed.

And another question.
-No discussion of addons to this device??

Well, if the weapon can't be made, there probarly wont be a discussion about it.

True enough, If I find a way to do client side effects using only server side code I will let you know and we can discuss the concept. Until that time there is little point talking about what can't be done.

Something client side would probably have to be obtained via the map pack. Any players that did not have it would be restricted to not being able to purchase it.

There would need to be a way to let players see it on others though, such as the mdl file.

You dont need to include it in a map pack , just to precache it with an amx plugin...

I just found in the amxx forum : (UPDATED)

Gaz nade
Alien Vision (amx only :( )

As I said above what needs to be on client side is code, not models etc. Since VAC and CD prevent client side code from hooking in it is not possbile to have the code client side. It would also require mods to everyone's cstrike.

The night vision plugins you list only activate the existing night vision in cstrike. A special weapon that was essentially the standard night vision would not be very useful.

What is being discussed is a considerable improvement over the gen 1 style night vision that CS has.
